CREATING LEADERS THAT SHAPE THE FUTURE

Your leadership didn’t end when you left the service — it was revealed. The After War Project’s Veterans Mentoring Veterans Leadership Program exists to help you reclaim direction, sharpen decision-making, and lead with purpose in your next chapter.  This is where veterans step forward again — not to follow, but to lead.

YOUR LEADERSHIP TRACK

You already know how to lead under pressure. What’s missing after service isn’t capability — it’s context, connection, and a clear mission. Veteran-to-veteran leadership development works because it’s built on shared experience, trust, and accountability. No theory. No posturing. Just leadership, practiced and applied.

You’ll start by leading yourself. Then you’ll train as a veteran mentor. From there, you’ll step into on-the-ground community leadership, organizing, guiding, and strengthening those around you. Leadership here is action — not a title.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP & ACTION

LEADERS BUILDING LEADERS

1. SELF LEADERSHIP THROUGH COACHING

Veterans begin by strengthening self-leadership, personal direction, and decision-making. This phase focuses on identity after service, goal clarity, and rebuilding confidence. Participants learn to lead themselves before stepping into leadership roles for others. Outcomes: clear personal direction, improved confidence and discipline, readiness to support others

2. PEER TO PEER TRAINING & MENTORSHIP

Participants are trained to serve as peer mentors, learning how to listen, guide, challenge, and support fellow veterans without judgment or dependency. Emphasis is placed on boundaries, accountability, and forward movement—not therapy or case management. Outcome: Strong communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to guide veterans through transition challenges.

LEADERSHIP SKILL BUILDING

Mentorship starts with trust. Veterans learn how to build credibility through shared experience, presence, and consistency. This component focuses on listening, rapport, and creating a safe, no-judgment space where real conversations can happe

Veterans are trained to mentor without fixing, rescuing, or enabling. The emphasis is on asking the right questions, offering perspective, and helping fellow veterans think clearly and take ownership of their decisions.

Mentorship is about progress. Veterans learn how to set clear goals, challenge complacency, and hold peers accountable to action. This component ensures conversations lead to movement, not just venting.

Mentors help mentees grow into leaders themselves. Veterans are trained to recognize readiness, encourage responsibility, and invite others into leadership roles—creating a cycle where mentorship multiplies and leadership spreads through the community.

3. COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP & ACTION

Veterans apply their skills by leading local initiatives, small groups, and community-based projects. This includes organizing veteran meetups, leading service projects, partnering with civic organizations, and strengthening veteran-civilian connection at the local level.

4. LEADERS BUILDING LEADERS

Graduates step into advanced leadership roles—training new mentors, launching local chapters, and sustaining After War’s mission in their communities. Leadership becomes multiplicative, not centralized.
